How to identify emotions

One of the most annoying things about having a nervous system that has been through a lot is that sometimes you know you feel something, but you cannot name it.
You’re not fine.
But you’re not exactly sad.
Or angry.
Or scared.
Or maybe you are all of them at once, with a little shame sprinkled on top for flavor.
Cute.
That’s where the wheel of emotions can be genuinely helpful.
If you’ve ever wondered, what is the wheel of emotions?, it’s basically a visual tool that helps you move from a vague feeling, like “bad” or “weird” or “I want to hide under the covers”, toward something more specific.
Maybe what you’re feeling is disappointment. Or jealousy. Or grief. Or rejection. Or overwhelm. Or tenderness. Or fear.
And naming it matters.
Especially with trauma or CPTSD, because so much of the emotional experience can feel like a fog. Your body reacts before your brain has words (There are actually great somatic exercices, if you want to check them out, that help loads with anxiety as well).
But, you might shut down, spiral, snap, freeze, people-please, or suddenly feel deeply weird and not know why.
The emotion wheel gives you a way in.
Some versions are simple, built around the 5 basic emotions wheel.
Others are more detailed, with lists that include 27 emotions or more (like here-under). There is no perfect version. You do not need to use it correctly like it’s a school exam. You just need one that helps you get a little closer to yourself.
And yes, there is a free feelings wheel online if you want to try it without buying anything.
I like using it when I feel overwhelmed, confused, disconnected, or when my brain is doing that deeply unhelpful thing where it says, “everything is wrong”, but refuses to elaborate.
Sometimes just being able to say, “Oh. I feel rejected,” or “I’m not angry, I’m hurt,” can soften something.
It does not solve everything.
But it gives the feeling a name.
And sometimes, that is the first tiny step out of the fog.
